Timeless Style for Timeless Portraits: Curating Cohesive Looks for Legacy-Focused Family Photo Sessions

When you’re planning a family photo session with a big group—think grandparents, cousins, siblings, in-laws—it’s easy to get overwhelmed by one very big question: What should everyone wear?

Coordinating outfits for large, multigenerational family portraits doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, with just a few simple tips and a little planning, you can pull together a look that feels cohesive, timeless, and true to your family’s style.

Here’s how to make it happen without group texts spiraling out of control:

Start With a Color Palette (Not Matching Outfits)

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans. Instead, choose 2–3 base colors and 1–2 accent tones. Think: soft blues, creams, and sage green for a beach session, or rich burgundy, mustard, and navy for fall.

Send the palette to your family, and let each person pick outfits that complement it. This gives you variety without clashing.

Keep It Comfortable & Weather-Appropriate

Everyone (especially kids) will photograph better if they’re not itching in wool sweaters or sweating in layers. Stick with lightweight fabrics in summer and cozy, breathable layers in fall or winter. And always check the weather!

Mind the Patterns (But Don’t Fear Them)

A few patterns are great, especially when balanced with solids. Avoid big logos or anything too bold that could steal focus. Florals, stripes, and small plaids are great options as long as there’s not too many competing at once.

Dress for the Location

Keep your backdrop in mind when choosing outfits. A session at the beach? Barefoot looks great, and flowy fabrics move beautifully in the wind. A rustic barn or woodland setting? Earth tones and textured fabrics work well.

Let Each Generation Shine

Let Grandma wear her favorite necklace. Let the teenagers show a little personality. The goal is harmony, not uniformity. The best photos happen when people feel confident and comfortable in what they’re wearing.

Bonus Tip: Lay It All Out

Encourage the family to do a “flat lay” of their outfits beforehand to see how everything looks together. Snap a quick pic and share with the group to make sure things flow.

Need help putting it all together? I’m always happy to weigh in before a session, just send me your ideas, and we’ll make sure your crew looks amazing and feels great.
